For Valerie Rodriguez daily life became somewhat routine. She enjoyed her Monday through Friday nine to five job but those three to four times a week she would be counting down the seconds until clock out time were some of the most anxiety filled moments. As Valerie clocked out, she would quickly grab her bags and hope to get down the elevator of her 19th floor office to catch the number four bus on her way to wrestling school. Life during the normal grind was fine but when she got between those ropes life was grand. She wasn’t just Val Rodriguez. She transformed into La Fortuna Valerie Rodriguez.
Valerie grew up on the idea of sending in 8x10s and videos of yourself hoping to get attention. The new school way of doing things was to shoot a DM over the owner hoping to get a look. She did both. After two years of training at the Midway Wrestling School in Chicago, her trainer finally gave her the thumbs up to venture out. She could only learn so much training with the same people week after week. She had established herself with the basics and was ready to make her professional debut. The issue, though, was no one was hiring her. Val could barely keep count of the amount of applications she filled out hoping to get attention. She finally got a contract with Blood and Nations Promotions but has yet to get the word she was needed somewhere.
Today, however, would prove to be a turning point. After running drills for the last forty five minutes, Valerie Rodriguez and her trainer, Charlie Franklin, took a water break. Val didn’t want to cramp up so she stretched out on the floor as she took sips from her water bottle. Then her phone chimed. Picking it up, she noticed a twitter alert. She opened.
Val clasped her mouth close with her free hand.
Valerie Rodriguez: Shut the fuck up.
Charlie looked at her inquisitively.
Charlie Franklin: Something wrong?
Val jumped to her feet as she showed the screen to Charlie.
Valerie Rodriguez: Quite the opposite. Women’s Wrestling Revolution accepted me. They are signing me to a contract. Even better, they run more regular shows than B.A.N. I’ll be making my debut sooner rather than later.
Charlie Franklin: That’s amazing.
Charlie hugged Valerie.
Valerie Rodriguez: But wait! Now there’s so much to do. I need new gear. I need to fix my car up to make the drives. Crap. I’m not ready.
Charlie hushes Val with a single finger.
Charlie Franklin: Calm down. This is what you’ve been preparing for. I know it’s scary but you’re ready. I’ll help you along the way until you’re up and running by yourself. You deserve this.
Val is still overwhelmed with excitement from the idea of having her first wrestling match outside of her wrestling school. She knows there’s a long road ahead of her but this is what she has worked for over the last couple of years. La Fortuna is about to rise.
